From the land of pyramids, pharaohs, and papyrus, we bring you a look at Egyptian culture past and present. Grab a cup of mint tea, fire up the hookah, crack open a novel by Naguib Mahfouz, play some songs by Abdel Halim Hafez, or put on a movie starring Omar Sharif and join us while we share recipes, music, jokes, videos, and current events from Egypt.

You Say You Want a Revolution?

Today's Scribe:

You may have noticed that it has been quite a while since our blog has seen any activity.  Believe me when I tell you there's a very good explanation for this fact, and it can be summed up best in a few lines of one of my all time favorite Beatles' songs:

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world.
. . .
You say you'll change the Constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head.
You tell me it's the Institution
Well, you know
You better free your mind instead.

Who'd have ever guessed that the "evolution" in the Egyptian revolution would mean using Facebook, Twitter, and the Smart Phone as weapons?  Or that the "bullets" --photos and live updates from the streets of Cairo showing the world the brutality of Mubarak's thugs -- from those weapons would be strong enough to topple an oppressive dictator?

Yes, folks, these are the best of times and the worst of times in Egypt.  But, these are exciting times, indeed!
